Dharma Talk December 2000

Last Monday morning I got up at 4:00 am to drive to Traverse City for a long planned 1 PM meeting. On a good day I can get there in about five hours. Since snow was predicted I decided to almost double the time so I could drive at half my normal speed and still arrive on time.

It turned out that the snow that had started to fall was freezing rain. By 6:30 am I had only covered forty miles. Calling it quits, I turned around and crawled my way back to Ann Arbor in Prajna, my trusty Subaru.

Arriving home facing a day free of demands I decided to clean the house. In fact I decided to take the entire day to do it. This is not an easy task since we're talking about four rooms total.

I started with the junk drawer. Cleaned it mindfully. An hour later I headed for the front closet. Two hours later, breaking for lunch, I thought about an old monk who refused to eat if the young monks wouldn't let him do manual work with them. "No work, no food." I knew what he meant. Plus manual work, when it isn't rushed, just plain feels good.

At 10:00 PM I stopped. The house felt happy and there were two huge plastic garbage bags filled with warm clothes, linens, a coffee maker, and even a couple of CDs for Safe House.

The snow was still falling. How lucky we are to have roofs over our heads, heat, and the earth holding us up.
